More tragedy than comedy

The Understudy

I enjoyed this book about a rather ineffectual actor, Stephen, who is understudy to an egotistical, good looking, charismatic, cocaine snorting, insufferable actor. Steven irritated me with his blandness more often than not, but I did empathise with him - and it was light relief after THE HEAVY ONE.

It's SOOOO heavy

The Mirror and the Light

The only thing I know for sure about this book is that it is too heavy and, my recommendation is that it gets torn in 2!!! Otherwise I am not certain what I feel about it. There are so many characters, intrigues, plots, abbeys, castles, dukes, priests - I felt more lost for longer than in the first two. But this could also be because I was mostly reading at 3am and expending more energy holding the book up than absorbing it. I think I must read it again on Kindle when I'm on holiday because I took in enough to know it really is excellent. Please will someone else read it and tell me what they think?

Intriguing story

Mr Wilder & Me

I wanted to call this book sweet, but that's sounds demeaning. It is though, but with depth, humour and pathos. A quirky glimpse into Billy Wilder and his movie "Fedora" shot in Greece, Germany and Paris. It's about being young and grabbing opportunities, but also about getting old and feeling that what you have left to offer is no longer needed. I loved it!
