Oh my goodness, this irritated me, BUT…….

Seeing Other People

I finished it and 300 pages later, in the last 30 pages, the story untangled. The plot didn’t work for me, it was not realistic, but what Mike Gayle does do well is give an excellent description of the agony experienced by fathers who, thanks to separation or divorce, no longer live with their children. He is a good writer and writes about ordinary people with empathy and insight. Though in my view not his best book he certainly opens up the possibility of interesting discussions about relationships.

Seeing Other People

I really enjoyed the way this book explores complex family relationships but from a man's point of view for a change - so many of this genre have women authors. This is the story of a man who makes a mistake and how he finds his way back to happiness. Mike Gayle (of The Museum of Ordinary People) is an interesting and prolific writer and I look forward to reading more of him - his gentle humour and self-deprecation are similar to novels by Stephen Boykey Sidley who is another male voice in this genre.
